History and Additional Facts In 1778 South Carolina becomes the eighth state. Charlestown name is changed to Charleston in 1783. South Carolina becomes the first state to succeed from the Union in 1860 In 2011 Nicki Haley becomes the first female govnor of South Carolina.

Additional facts The eastern part of South Carolina is a lowland that borders the Atlantic Ocean. South Carolina had the first government supported lending library in 13 original colonies. Carolina is Latin form of Charles.
