2 www.shropscommunityhealth.nhs.uk Session Objectives To outline the five LEAN principles. To explore how we could apply these principles to (some of) our team processes. To examine the eight areas of “Muda”. To identify “Muda” within this process and suggest how this could be eliminated. To identify how we could use LEAN across our team. “These workshops are aimed at team leaders / team members who are keen to examine their current activities and processes and see how they can improve them by making a series of small changes”

4 www.shropscommunityhealth.nhs.uk Choose ONE of your processes to explore: 1. Who are your customers in this process? 1. How is this process important to your customers? 2. Write down each and every step of this process in detail. 2. Are there any parts of this process which do not add value to your customers? 3. (Is there any “Muda” in the different stages your process?) 3. (How could the process flow better with the “Muda” gone?) 4. Does your process respond to your customer demand? 4. How could you improve your process to respond to customer demand? 5. What else can you tweak to improve this process?

5 www.shropscommunityhealth.nhs.uk The LEAN journey Evolution not revolution. LEAN is a process, not an instantaneous result. LEAN is about recognisable incremental change.

7 www.shropscommunityhealth.nhs.uk Using the same process as before, identify: 1.Are you doing / producing / holding too much of something? 2.Is there any waiting anywhere in the process? 3.Does poor layout affect your process or is anything hard to find? 4.Are you taking any unnecessary steps in the process? 5.Do you have excess stocks of anything in the process? 6.Is there unnecessary geographic movement to fulfil the process? 7.Are there regular errors / poor quality issues which lead to parts of the process having to be repeated? 8.Is there anyone else whose skills could help with this process?
