Brainstorm With the person next to you, brainstorm all the words you associate with management and managers. Use managers you know as inspiration for your brainstorm.

Management style is the manner and approach of providing direction, implementing plans and motivating people. Most leaders use a range of styles based on the organisations structure, the situation that needs to be managed, their own personality and the characteristics of their subordinates. There are five distinct management styles.

Management Style Continuum Task- Orientated Employee- Orientated

Autocratic / Authoritarian Boss centred Managers make the majority of decisions Little trust in employees Strict top down chain of command

Persuasive Very similar to the autocratic management style (follows the same principles) Managers endeavour to persuade employees the decisions they have made are right

Consultative Managers consult employees Management makes all final decisions Understands the importance of positive relationships with employees

Participative Employees are a part of decision- making Involves a team work approach Suited to a flat management structure

Laissez-Faire Managers take a step back Employees are given control for setting direction, tasks and decision-making.

Activity One AutocraticPersuasiveConsultativeParticipativeLaissez-Faire List the words written in your brainstorms under the appropriate management style. Note: Some words will fit under more than one style.

Teacher Assessment Identify 3 of your teachers management styles. Examine why the teachers use these management styles and the effectiveness of the styles.
