The Elements of Art One or more elements of art will always be present in a work of art
2
The Elements of Art The Elements of Art are the building blocks of an art creation. They are the VISUAL LANGUAGE of art
3
There are SEVEN Elements of art : 1.Line - most basic element 2.Shape 3. Value 4. Space 5. Color – most noticeable element 6. Texture 7. Form
4
Line Defined as: a continuous mark made on a surface; Most BASIC Element Can vary in width, direction, curvature, & length.
5
Types Of Line: Vertical Horizontal Diagonal Curved Zig Zag
7
Lines in Art:
8
Controlled Lines
9
Loose Lines
10
Drawing with Lines
11
Shape Shape is created when a line becomes connected and encloses space. Shapes are flat -2 Dimensional (2-D) You can measure its HEIGHT and its WIDTH.
12
Shape There are two basic types of shape: –Geometric = straight & angular –Organic = smooth, curvy, free-form.
13
Geometric shapes have smooth even edges and are measurable. Examples include the square, the circle, the triangle and the rectangle.
14
Geometric Shapes: oval rectangleoctagon parallelogram hexagon trapezoid pentagon
15
Organic shapes have irregular edges and are usually found in nature; free form. Leaves, flowers, cloud, etc.
16
Organic
18
Value Lightness or darkness of a color or tone
20
Value Scale: Various shades from white to black
21
Space: Space is everywhere Indicates areas between, around, above, below, or within something
22
Ways to achieve space: 1. Overlapping 2. Size Change 3. Linear Perspective
23
SPACE:
24
Color Most noticeable of the art elements Is reflected light visible to the human eye
26
Primary colors are not mixed from other colors and they generate all other colors. Red Yellow Blue There are 3 Primary Colors
27
Color Schemes Primary Colors
28
Secondary Colors By mixing two primary colors, a secondary color is created. There are 3 Red + Yellow = Orange Yellow + Blue = Green Blue + Red = Violet
29
Color Moods
30
Texture An element of art which refers to the surface quality or “feel” of an object, its smoothness, roughness, softness, etc.
31
Janet Fish Oranges 1973 Pastel on Sandpaper Janet Fish used pastels to create visual textures in this work. In some areas she has combined different kinds of visual textures, such as shiny-rough, and shiny smooth, and matte smooth.

Form A Form is a shape that has become 3- Dimensional Form has HEIGHT, WIDTH and DEPTH--which is the 3 rd dimension. (3 –D) Depth shows the thickness of the object. Forms are NOT flat like shapes are!
35
Turning Shapes into Forms A rectangle can become a box or a cylinder
36
Form:
38
Form There are two basic types of shape: –Geometric = straight & angular ( sphere, cube, etc.) –Organic = smooth, curvy, free-form. ( YOU are an example of an organic form)

42
Forms Forms are objects having three dimensions. Like shapes, they both have length and width, but forms also have depth. YOU are a three dimensional form, so is a tree or a table.
