Science Textbook Adoption: K-6 Science The K-6 Science Adoption Committee evaluated several textbooks, piloted the top two, and conducted a side-by-side standards sampling. They have recommended California Science, Scott Foresman (Pearson) which was subsequently approved by Curriculum Council on 3/13/08. The presentation highlights the process that was followed and the reasons for making this adoption.

Elementary Science Text Adoption Process

Preparing to Pilot February ‘07 - teacher committee narrows state-approved science texts to the two top choices: MacMillan and Scott Foresman

Preparing to Pilot February ‘07 - teacher committee narrows state-approved science texts to the two top choices: MacMillan and Scott Foresman March ‘07 - science pilot team attends training from publishers.

Piloting Process Teachers pilot for two quarters. Each teacher communicates on a regular basis with a partner who pilots the other publisher. All piloting teachers come together periodically, calibrate their numbers, and hand in individual scores.

Piloting Timeline 7/16/07 - Rubric and data sheet training 9/20/07 - “What Students Do” 11/1/07 - “What Teachers Do” 12/13/07 - “Content” 1/24/08 - “Assessment” and final decision

Side-by-side Standards Sampling A standards sampling was performed.

Side-by-side Standards Sampling A standards sampling was performed. Summative questions were identified that less than 1/3 of students answered correctly.

Side-by-side Standards Sampling A standards sampling was performed. Summative questions were identified that less than 1/3 of students answered correctly. The questions were correlated to the standards they address. 4th: 5c - weathering, transport and deposition 5th: 2g - plant and animal cellular respiration

Side-by-side Standards Sampling A rubric and scoring sheet was developed using input from both the Science adoption Toolkit and Math Adoption Toolkit. The texts from the two publishers were evaluated comparatively in a side-by-side manner. Content and assessment were the two categories evaluated.
