2 Over the last decade, the University has implemented a number of green technologies 1) Change computing policies: a) More energy efficient hardware b) Virtualization c) Thin and thick Clients 2) Overhauled printing practices in sites

3 1) When not in use, Computers 4 modes a) Do nothing, run normally (almost never used) b) Standby, turns monitor off i. HD may or may not spin down, some other controls c) Sleep, turns all off but network d) Turn off entirely

4 1) Standard desktop used 2000 hours per year and Standby uses approx $110 in electricity a) 170W in use, 85W standby, 10W Sleep b) All savings from standby -> Monitor. c) CPU uses same in standby as in use! 2) Same machine using sleep mode: $50 per year, saves $60 or 55%. 3) Turning off when not in use saves and additional $6 (could use hibernate)

5 1) Laptops use 30-50W overall, far more efficient. a) When using hibernate usage to zero, b) consumption varies with usage level c) Stepping mode, brightness, etc. 2) iMacs, use about 80W awake, 40-50W sleep or standby (same), about $60 a year. 3) MacPros same or more usage than desktop depending on configuration.

10 1) 2008 CS&S Server Renovation a) Initially 18 physical servers b) 10 Virtualized (8 site plus 2 core/admin) c) Two virtual hosts d) Net savings per machine: $160, and this was a low ratio. $1600/yr. in electricity e) Other costs as well: Cooling, space, etc. f) Ended up using excess capacity for testing g) Ratio of 8:1 easily obtainable -> $180 per machine in electricity alone.
