Staying Alive-Round 2 Analysis Goals: (1) Communicate the results of an experiment; (S1, C3, PO ) (2)Interpret the data; (S1, C3, PO ) (3)Analyze investigational errors (S1, C3, PO6)
2
How to Write a Summary (Listen only-don’t write) 1.Begin with a summary statement. 2.In the middle, discuss numerical details such as: Highs & lows Averages Differences Mean, median, mode, range 3.Finally, interpret the meaning of the data or how it will be applied
3
1. Write this in summary paragraph… Overall, the wider/longer Tweezarian collected the most food.
4
2. Write this in summary paragraph… The wider/longer mutation collected _______g and the original Tweezarian obtained the least with only ______g. This is because…
5
3. Write this in summary paragraph… The Tweezarian population will most likely have more individuals with wider pinchers since it helps them obtain more food.
6
Error Analysis (Just listen) Think about anything that could have made the data inaccurate. –Misuse of or faulty equipment –Inconsistent in way data was collected –“constant” variables were not kept constant –Not following procedures carefully someone standing, someone trapping or scooping up beans, someone being overly aggressive and/or stealing beans from another, etc.
7
The Error Analysis paragraph should have the following: Topic sentence-begin with “Although the data seems to”… Address 2-3 concerns with accuracy/reliability/validity: procedures that were not followed or were difficult to perform address issues with equipment, if any address human error issues Suggest a follow-up experiment
8
Investigational Errors Write this topic sentence: Although the data seems to show a clear “winner,” it may not be completely accurate. Finish writing the paragraph by explaining the ways your group could have messed up the data collection.
9
Sample Investigational Errors Your paragraph should look something like this: Although the data seems to show a clear “winner,” it may not be completely accurate. The weight of the cup was included in the first measurement. Also, if one person did not follow all of the procedures, it would cause different results in the data. Also some people were faster than others. So the data would be more reliable if tools were traded.
10
Conclusion – options (Just listen) The data supports the hypothesis The data does not support the hypothesis Why or why not
11
1. Look back at the hypothesis that you wrote. 2. Choose the one below that matches your group’s situation. 3. Write it as the conclusion. The data supported the hypothesis because the wider pinchers collected the most food. The data did not support the hypothesis because _________ did not collect as much food as the wider mutation.
12
The data supported the hypothesis because the wider pinchers collected the most food. The data did not support the hypothesis because _________ did not collect as much food as the wider mutation. Conclusion Written in 3 rd person/formal/academic format.
