How a Tree Grows
2
Trees grow by producing new cells in a very limited number of places.
These places of cell division are called meristems.
3
Trees grow in height as a result of meristems that are located at their branch tips.
Trunk diameter growth occurs as a result of another meristem called the vascular cambium.
4
The vascular cambium produces new xylem and phloem each year and due to this, the trunk, branches and roots continue to increase in diameter. The xylem is split into two parts- the heartwood, which is old xylem that helps support the tree and sapwood, which is the active xylem that transports water and nutrients.
5
Height growth only occurs from the branch tips.
6
If water and nutrients are plentiful, the vascular cambium will grow more rapidly, so the ring will be wider.
