The Self and Society: A Critical Introduction to Melville’s Bartleby the Scrivener through a Collection of Poetic Works

Recap: Yesterday we selected Bartleby the Scrivener, a short story by Herman Melville, as our first literary text of the year…

Ready? …Today we will begin our study of Bartleby the Scrivener by examining one theme that Melville explores throughout the text.

Hold on! “Theme?” What exactly is that? Take a moment to discuss with a neighbor… Any ideas?

Key Term! Theme: An implicit or recurring idea; a motif.

Poetry Poster Activity Today’s activity will explore the literary theme of the individual self within society. In groups, you will be analyzing poetry, and producing a poster and presentation.

Directions! Assemble yourselves into groups. Assign yourselves the following roles: –Materials Person –Directions Keeper –Facilitator –Time Keeper

Roles! Materials Person: See me for your group’s packet, collect poster paper and markers. Provide directions keeper with instructions. Directions Keeper: Materials person will give you the sole copy of instructions for the activity. You will communicate procedure and expectations to group Facilitator: You will make sure everyone has input in the group’s work. Time Keeper: You will keep an eye on the clock. This activity will be 30 minutes in length.

Journal Entry #5 As we continue our study of Bartleby the Scrivener, we will get to know a character who is completely at odds with society’s expectations… I would like you to write about your “Self” within our society: Is there conflict or harmony? Are you silenced or heard? What can you do to fulfill your individual needs? Does society hinder or help? Take ten minutes. Thank you for learning today.
