How Do We Know if It’s Working? A Way to Approach “Problems” in First Amendment Schools

Peeling the Onion Purpose: o Provide a structured way to look at a problem and avoid immediately trying to “solve” it.

Peeling the Onion Tips: o Before trying to solve a problem, make sure everyone first understands all the issues at play. o Peel away the layers of the problem so deeper issues can be addressed.

Peeling the Onion Roles: o Facilitator – Time Keeper, keeps group on track, reviews process o Presenter(s) – Describe a problem or dilemma and ask question group will respond to. o Group members – provide clarifying questions and feedback to presenter(s).

Peeling the Onion Protocol: o Presenters describe problem and ask a question to help focus the group’s responses. o Group members ask purely informational clarifying questions. o Group members respond to question and provide feedback to what they’ve heard. o Presenters have chance to respond. o Together, presenters and group discuss possibilities and options. o Large Group debrief
