Career Counseling Helps students develop necessary attitudes to explore career options. Self-reflection Restructure their beliefs Deepen their personalities Answer the “Who am I” question

Why is this important? Because it is often totally overlooked! Many schools do not offer additional counseling for the gifted and talented students Personnel are not available for services Most students are simply left to figure things out on their own.

Multipotentiality The ability to select and develop any number of career options because of a wide variety of interests, aptitudes, and abilities The broad range of opportunities available tends to increase the complexity of decision making and goal setting, and it may actually delay career selection. Multipotentiality is most commonly a concern of students with moderately high IQs (120-140), those who are academically talented, and those who have two or more outstanding but very different abilities such as music and math.

When Should Gifted Children Begin Preparing for College? Seventh and eighth grades Self-awareness, time management, work/study skills, and career awareness. Ninth and tenth grades Decision making and goal setting. Eleventh and twelfth grades Practical aspects of college and career planning, including the college application process, exposure to occupations and job internships, and mentor relationships.

How Can Gifted Children Explore Possible Career Paths? Because they have such a broad range of interests and abilities, some gifted students have difficulty deciding on a career path. You can help by taking these steps: Expose your child to a variety of work environments. Ask open-ended questions when your child mentions careers and avoid statements that imply expectations. Urge your child to explore as many careers as possible. Encourage your child to volunteer in your community. Encourage your child to join high school internship programs.
