A tumour is a mass of cells that continue to divide and increase in number for no benefit to the body

There are 2 types of tumours: 1- benign – not cancerous because it does not affect any surrounding cells 2 - malignant – cancerous because it interferes with the function of healthy cells - Cancerous cells travel in the blood and can an invade other parts of the body and cause new tumours to form there

There are 2 main causes for cancer: 1 – inherited -one that appears within members of the same family EX. Breast and colon cancer 2- environmental - Caused by an environmental factor called a carcinogen EX. Tobacco, X-rays, even cosmetics

Contains 4000 chemicals and 50 of them are carcinogens the most common cause of lung cancer

Antioxidants are chemicals that prevent cells from becoming cancer cells Foods rich in antioxidants are: Tomatoes, carrots, grapes, and broccoli Poor diet is linked to colon cancer

Skin cancer is caused by ultraviolet radiation (UV) from the sun UV causes mutations in the skin cells

There are 2 types of UV: 1- UVA – causes the skin to tan 2 – UVB – causes the skin to burn UVA penetrates more deeply and is more harmful than UVB Both can lead to a deadly form of skin cancer called melanoma
