Motivates members to participate in Societies Events (Sports, Charity Events, Showcase, Volunteering). Encourages participation of all members. Recognises the strengths of the committee and delegates committee jobs accordingly. Manages complaints/issues professionally and maturely. Initiates positive change within the Society. Liaises with the Societies President and Societies Committee. Chairs committee meetings. Books meeting rooms for committee and society meetings. 4 Vision WHAT IS A CHAIR? What is the meeting for? Or what are the club’s objectives? Chair should have awareness of long-term issues, planning. If it is a regular meeting, the objectives are the agenda items. Direction Make sure you take people along the right ‘path’ to achieve those objectives Security Developing the group’s sense of well-being, encouraging teambuilding, allowing all individuals to be part of the team, welcoming ideas

5 HOW DO THEY DO IT? In meetings you have already had, discuss things that have gone wrong What has gone wrong? Who was responsible? 1.Before the meeting/start of the year- Preparation 2.During the meeting/year- Managing 3.After the meeting/end of year- Review/Summarise 3 stages to a meeting and 3 stages to the year in office:

6 DEALING WITH DIFFICULT BEHAVIOR List the sorts of behaviour that are/might be difficult for a chair to deal with: In a meeting In general How would you deal with this behavior?

7 DEALING WITH DIFFICULT BEHAVIOR How would you deal with this behavior? 1. A member of committee has not shown up to the last two committee meetings without giving apologies. How would you deal with this situation? 2. A committee member is not being very cooperative and talks negatively about ideas suggested by others during the meeting. How would you deal with this situation? 3. Committee members have lost interest in the meeting agenda as they believe the topic doesn’t concern their position so they sit and text throughout the rest of the meeting. How would you deal with this situation?

8 DEALING WITH DIFFICULT BEHAVIOR How would you deal with this behavior? 1. A committee member has lots of ideas for the society’s next social and keeps interrupting others during the meeting to discuss the social and their ideas. How would you deal with this situation? 2. Another committee member has organised a committee meeting without the Chair’s approval. How would you deal with this situation? 3. A committee member is failing to do the tasks they have been delegated. They arrive at the meeting with still no further progress then last week. How would you deal with this situation?

9 DEALING WITH DIFFICULT BEHAVIOR How would you deal with this behavior? 1. A committee member has decided, without knowing they are doing it, that they are leading the committee meeting and have taken charge/control of the meeting. How would you deal with this situation? 2. The topic of the meeting has gone off agenda and the committee are now discussing personal/friendship matters e.g. one of the committee members has just discovered they have rats in their house and this has now become the topic of discussion. How would you deal with this situation? 3. A member of committee always seems to dominate the committee meeting discussions- an example of this would be by talking for long periods of time.

10 DEALING WITH DIFFICULT BEHAVIOR How would you deal with this behavior? 1. A member of committee rarely speaks during committee meetings. How would you deal with this situation? 2. The agenda of the meeting has overrun. The meeting is meant to finish in 10minutes but there are still topics on the agenda that need to be discussed. How would you deal with this situation? 3. A committee member feels like they are being bullied by the other committee members and no longer wants to be on committee because of it. How would you deal with this situation?
