AVID Icebreaker/Strategy Silent Unscramble

Where did we end last year? Students with C or better in all classes: We impressed a Demo team with our use of AVID in the classes they saw, but we also need to increase the use of and effectiveness of WICOR strategies in all classes. We need to increase our college going physical environment and culture also. 7th68% 8th78% Total73%

Where does our AVID Program stand now? This year we have 234 number of students 54: 6th graders 74: 7th graders 106: 8th graders Expectations for students: 10-15# of Cornell Notes for 7 th graders, daily use of agendas, weekly participation in tutorials, no grades lower than a C, great work habits

Step 1: Build a strong Site Team (ess. 11.1 and 11.6) -The 4 day training taught us many lessons but the strongest point of those lessons is that a movement needs a strong core. -As we move up to DEMO status we need to show off our school to the rest of the world. -The best way to do that is to have a strong, site team that is vested not only in AVID but in the success of our students in our school.

Step 1: Build a strong Site Team (ess. 11.1 and 11. 6) -The first step is this meeting itself. The mysticism of AVID is long gone but now there exists a slight sense of complacency. -A great site team that delegates the work of AVID would help build the community of AVID within the school.

Step 1: Build a strong Site Team (ess. 11.1 and 11. 6) -This strong team has to be built by all of the stakeholders. -So this means that we have to use our professionalism and irresistible charm to bring the parents in and make them part of the AVID site team.

Step 2: Create successful intervention plan for students with struggling grades (ess. 4.2) Inform teachers who AVID students are Complete GPA Analysis/Goal setting form Create individualized intervention plan for students in need Open up probation meetings to all teachers

Step 3: Effectively analyze data to address skill/content gaps among students 2011-2012 CST Data Tutorials Periodic Assessment Data Content Power Standards (CFAs) Grade Tutorial Analyses (Progress Reports)

Step 4: Train staff on Philosophical Chairs and Socratic Seminars Academic teachers will be trained through Academies Opportunities to observe AVID students in action AVID Elective teachers - four per semester Academic teachers - one per semester Calendar topics/dates used

Socratic Seminars
