New York City in the eyes of Tocqueville " So here we are in New-York. To a Frenchman the aspect of the city is bizarre and not very agreeable. One sees neither dome, nor bell tower, nor great edifice, with the result that one has the constant impression of being in a suburb. In its centre the city is built of brick, which gives it a most monotonous appearance. The houses have neither cornices, nor balustrades, nor portes-cocheres. The streets are very badly paved, but sidewalks for pedestrians are to be found in all of them. We had all the trouble in the world getting lodgings because at this time of year strangers abound; and we wanted to find a pension rather than an inn. At length we succeeded in establishing ourselves admirably in the most fashionable street, called Broadway."

What New York City is like today… “New York is now the business capital of the United States. Its horizon is lined with skyscrapers, and its sidewalks, always lined with a crowded group of people.”

NYC History Giovanni Da Verrazzo was in command of the French ship, La Dauphine, when he visited the region in 1524 when he thought that he sailed into Upper New York Bay. He named the area Nouvelle-Angoulêmeor or New York City. European settlement started in 1609. New York City was the nation’s first national capital in 1788 and lasted until 1790. During the 19 th century the city was transformed by immigration and their culture.

The skyscraper epitomized New York's success of the early 20th century; it was home to the tallest building between 1908 and 1974.

How did the physical environment impact the city and culture? New York City being mostly flat land, made a lot of opportunities for building. An example of that would be work buildings being built, this would open up new jobs increasing New York City’s economy, easily impacting the city.

Donald Trump Donald Trump was born in 1946, he has become one of the world’s most prominent businessmen. He based his operations in New York City where he built the Trump Towers. The one located in New York City has become one of the many well known building in New York City. His show “The Apprentice” is filmed also there.

He established several notable philanthropies, including the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, The Rockefeller Foundation, and the General Education Board. He also is remembered for spearheading construction of the Rockefeller Center in New York City. John D. Rockefeller Jr.

What does New York City have to offer today? Shopping Authentic foreign food Beautiful sights Tourist attractions

Hypothesize We think that over time the more New York City will expand their shopping, tourist attractions, and workplace buildings their economy will increase.

Our Group’s proposal Aimed to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We believe that more banks and more buildings will increase Pittsburgh’s economy and give more unemployed people jobs.
