Service Learning: Service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. links the task or community service to self- reflection, self-discovery, and the acquisition and comprehension of values, skills, and knowledge content

1) MCPS Indicators –Specific Learning goals from MCPS curriculum that are integrated into the projects –Examples: Fourth Grade: 1.4.8 Analyze data to identify trends and form conclusions 3.3.1.1 Group related ideas and maintain a consistent focus throughout the writing process 2)Social Emotional Skills and Values –Examples: Empathic skills: sensing what others are feeling Leadership Skills: Empowerment

3)Content/Classroom Activities –Component where students are preparing and learning about their service projects –Examples: »Using the computer lab for research »Brainstorming ideas in class 4)Support Activities –Any outside support that helps the students learn more about their projects and to help understand reasons for service learning –Examples: Classroom Guidance (Counselor) Guest speakers

MCPS IndicatorSocial and Emotional Skills/ Values Content/Classroom Activities Support Activities Service Learning 1.1.5.1 State purpose for reading and read to perform a task (Students will follow directions to make bracelets/ snowflakes/fram es) 5.1.2.3 Gather and convey information from listening 5.1.1.1 Demonstrate active listening skills to the speaker, making visual contact, responding to others and asking questions -Empathic skills: sensing what others are feeling, understand what it would be like to be a young patient facing cancer Social Awareness: Becoming aware and having a new perspective on what some children must deal with in their lives -Caring -Respect Leadership Skills: Empowerment/ Feeling of helping others -Students will follow directions and make friendship bracelets for the patients at The Children’s Inn(Nov. 30) Students will make thoughtful treasures for the patients (snowflakes-Feb.) Students will write/design an end of the year thoughtful treasure (frames/signs:May ) -Counselor will discuss community service and “What is a Helper?” -Nicole Hannans will speak to the classes about the Children’s Inn on Oct. 26 th @12:45 Students will visit or have the counselor drop off friendship bracelets for the patients (Nov.) Both thoughtful treasures will be delivered to the Children’s Inn in Feb. and May. LEARNING TO CARE : 1 st Grade: The Children’s Inn Reflection: Students will complete an exit card after support activities and after hearing the speaker, as well as a Plus/Delta, in order to ensure and evaluate their level of understanding in helping this organization
