Physical Attributes - “He kept his tippet stuffed with pins for curls, And pocket knives, to give to pretty girls’ (231) He uses the money he begs to give gifts to women, instead of feeding the poor. This shows he does not do his duty, and is deceitful and fraudulent. - “His neck was whiter than a lily-flower, But strong enough to butt a bruiser down’ (236) – Not as he seems, misleading. - His eyes “twinkle in his head as bright as any star”(271-272) which shows his mischievous side and his enthusiasm. - He spends the church’s money on an expensive, ‘double-worsted’ (265) habit that was more fitting for ‘a Doctor or a Pope’ (264) – Friars should live a modest, pious life, but this Friar is crooked, and does not. ‘

4. Non-Physical Attributes The Friar is corrupt - He lies, saying that he is “qualified to hear confessions” (216) for he has “a special license from the Pope” (218) - He will bestow “pleasant absolution, for a gift”(220) - He is willing to “arbitrate disputes” but only if paid “a small fee”(260) He is hypocritical - He knows “every innkeeper and barmaid … better than lepers, beggars and that crew” (239-240) - Defying his vow of chastity, he sleeps with girls and then marries them off (210-211) - Does not appear as the typical “cloistered scholar … but much more like a Doctor or Pope” (261-263)

5. He is charming - He makes his “English sweet upon his tongue” (269) with “gallant phrase and well turned speech” (209) - Even begging from a poor widow, “so pleasant was his holy how- d’ye-do, he got his farthing from her just the same”(254-255) - “Highly beloved and intimate (is) he with … city dames” (213-215) - He keeps with him gifts “to give to pretty girls”(232) He is jovial - He knows the “taverns well in every town” (238) and frequents them - “At sing-songs” he is very popular, for he plays the “hurdy-gurdy” and his voice is “gay and sturdy”(233-235) - He even moves jovially and is known to romp “just like a puppy” (258)
