BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP Involving YE Students in Service Projects By Rtn. Ivan L. Vianna District 4760 - BRAZIL EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE SWITZERLAND
2
BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP This session is intended to explore ideas for maximizing the opportunities for YE students to participate in service projects during their exchange year What is the objective of this session? EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
3
BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP Many host clubs have already used not only inbound but also their future outbound students to participate in their service projects. YE students have already been involved in service projects, this is not new. It could be a fund-raising activity such as BB-Q or a school drive for YE candidates, a visit to potential host families, a musical performance, a polio vaccination drive or anything else. EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP Our District 4760 in Brazil may report several examples of different activities YE students have participated. Let us show three of them: YE from BR in Thailand YE from the Netherlands in BR YE from JAPAN D-2770 in BR EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP YE FELICIA from the Netherlands YE Felicia Von Maltzahn from D-1600, the Netherlands, created a violin school for poor children at her host city in Brazil. Most of these children had NEVER had any access to music and some were homeless. She conducted a performance of that violin group before the end of her exchange year in our nation capital, Brasilia. She left behind not only a music school but also a great example to be followed. EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

BRASIL – P.I.J. DO D - 4760 Project “I do not throw garbage in the streets” This project was created by YE Kurara Saegusa, from RC of Saitama, District 2770 in Japan, hosted by the RC BH Novas Gerações. She was inspired by a similar project done in her home city in Japan. It happened in April 2010 in the streets of a fancy section of Belo Horizonte – a city of nearly 4 million people. Besides having full support of her host Club, she was helped by other YE students hosted in the city and ROTEX students. EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
8
BRASIL – P.I.J. DO D - 4760 This project was approved by the City Officers, it involved a large group to elaborate an educational kit. It was widely seen and advertised on the media. City officers estimated over 65,000 people were somehow touched by this project done during ONE day. Kurara planted the seed of an action that will continue for several years after she returned to Japan, thanks to her host club members. BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP Challenge happens in life so it is never to be boring, they arrive to be overcomed: YE students like to be challenged, as any youth leader. But why would they participate in a service project? RYE students do have strong leadership skill. They may also have more fun when committed to a service project while living abroad EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
11
BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP AS SHOWN BEFORE, IT DEPENDS ON EACH ROTARY CLUB AND EACH DISTRICT TO CHOOSE A PROJECT WHERE THEIR HOST STUDENT MAY BE ASKED TO PARTICIPATE. IN ANOTHER WORDS, IT MAY DEPENDS… ON YOU! EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
12
BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP NOW, IMAGINE IF ALL YOUTH EXCHANGE OFFICERS OF THE WORLD GET TOGETHER ON A PROJECT WITH THE STUDENTS: WHAT A HUGE POTENTIAL ! EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth and dignity to people affected by disaster worldwide. Some INFO on ShelterBox: EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH ShelterBox was founded by Tom Henderson, a Rotarian from U.K, and it has delivered more than 90,000 boxes since it started in April, 2000.

BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP ShelterBox has grown to become the largest Rotary Club project in the history of the organization. Rotarian support currently contributes an estimated 50% of ShelterBox donations. Around 5,000 Rotary Clubs worldwide have supported ShelterBox since it was launched. The cost of a box is $1,000 including delivery direct to those who need it. Each box bears its own unique number so a donor can track its box all the way to the recipient country via the website. BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP Students engaged on activities that will lead to get ShelterBoxes may have increase their self-esteem at a moment in life when that means a lot in their education. ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE STUDENT may be one of Rotary’s most admired program, both inside & outside Rotary. Combining ShelterBox with Rotary YE students in a Global Project has a lot of potential for both: Rotary Clubs may get more interested families for hosting student as this Program is implemented as media will give attention. Membership may also grown. EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
23
BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP We quote Rotary International Strategic Plan as it encourages all Rotarians to: 1.Advance the recognition and public image of Rotary 2.Expand membership globally in both numbers and quality 3.Increase Rotary’s capacity to provide service. This Project is qualified to support the above goals. Also, as a project of any Rotary Clubs it fits in the 5 th Avenue of Service recently created: NEW GENERATIONS besides sharing COMMUNITY SERVICE AVENUE EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
24
The goals of this Global YE Project are: BRASIL – P.I.J. DO D - 4760 1.Format and development of project with information sent to Districts and Clubs all over the RYE world; 2.Search of criativity to elaborate fund raising activities + creating a conscious priority of its importance to YEO Rotarians 3. At the end of this year, our goal would reach an amount of donation per YE student of US$ 100,00 or 10% of a ShelterBox. It is a three year long Project: July 2010 to June 2013. First year: July 2010 to June 2011 (NOW!!!) EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
25
BRASIL – P.I.J. DO D - 4760 1.Hopefully more known and recognized, the Project shall have a bigger media support on the actions of fund raising involving the inbound exchange students, host clubs and host families; 2.The goal is to reach a per capita donation of 30% of a ShelterBox cost, or US$ 300,00 throughout the year, what means US$ 25. a month per student. Second year: july 2011 to June 2012 1.All YE hosted in that year who decided to participate would raise enough donation thru their combined efforts with YEOs, host families and club members that provide would ShelterBox 50% of one kit, or US$ 500,00 or US$ 42.00 per month. Third and last year: july 2012 to june 2013 The goals of this Global YE Project are: EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
