Draft Tsunami Warning Cartoon Booklet CDEMA USAID UWI Workshop, Hyatt Regency Hotel, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, 28 October 2009 Rationale for selection : To produce tsunami information in the Caribbean context
3
To educate many aspects of tsunamis – causes, behaviour, early warning systems, researching tsunamis and preparedness Its cartoon design makes it highly appealing and easy to understand for young persons and for the general public. Objective of booklet
4
Instructional design The story line flowed for easy understanding Underscored the importance of heeding tsunami warnings by authorities, and the role of scientists in saving lives. Concepts are clearly introduced and developed. The limited amount of scientific information is well-done, with wave dimensions and maps providing factual information in cartoon form. Text was kept to a minimum yet informative. The story line approach kept a friendly and conversational tone to the booklet. The non-technical vocabulary is appropriate for the audience. There is no involvement of the audience in activities suggested.
5
Audience Young persons
6
Social and cultural considerations Both males and females, young and old appear in positive roles taking responsibility for preparedness alongside each other in jobs and in the home environment. The content shows respect for target audience’s values, customs, beliefs and prior knowledge.
7
Adaptability to the Caribbean Booklet can be adapted to the Caribbean by referencing Caribbean tsunami occurrences and warning systems. The information can help increase resilience of coastal communities to the tsunami hazard through preparedness
8
Overall impression The cartoon booklet is visually appealing, very informative, and easy to read and understand. The cartoon idea for the book was very effective. Weakness - its US focus and content.
