Borrowed Back From Math & Science: Using 3D Graphic Organizers to Learn Art Concepts and Art History NAEA 2009 Minneapolis Convention Center Sat. Introduction & Inspiration I have always used innovative organizers in my teaching at all levels including: middle school, high school, college, and the museum. The inspiration for this presentation came when a group of colleagues returned from a staff development bursting with excitement for Dinah Zike’s Foldables. I thought it was great that these teachers were using strong visuals in their classroom, but as the visual arts teacher I noticed 2 important things about how this resource was being used.

Creativity & Design Creativity Most teachers used the ideas exactly as presented in the book: the matchbook was for the periodic chart, the pocket book was for the six kingdoms, and the 4 sided diorama was for volcanoes. Design The ideas as presented in the book did not always use the best design to optimize the communication of information.

Flip Book – Elements of Art For example: I make an example for each table or group, the students hand write their own graphic organizer as part of the learning process. When possible I have students brain storm the “Hint ” sentence. However, I do pick just one “hint” for the whole class and stick with it to avoid confusion. ABC Chart – Warm Vs. Cool Colors The ABC Chart is a team challenge. Students write the 26 letters of the alphabet then race against each other and the clock to classify as many items under each topic by letter. In this example, students demonstrated their knowledge of warn vs. cool colors by classifying crayon, marker, and paint hues. One team used warm, the other used cool.

ABC Chart – Characteristics of a Leader The content can be 100% student driven, as in this example where students were asked to describe the characteristics of a good leader. You can also divide up the alphabet. Group 1(A-M) Group 2 (N-Z)

4-Door Book – Brain Based Learning #4 This is a modification / combination of two books described in Zike’s Science Foldables [the “4-door” & the “pocket”].

4-Door Book – Brain Based Learning I used it to teach the basics of brain based learning to future teachers in my M.A.T class. It was both a way to teach content and model the potential for graphic organizers.

Classic Folded Book –Criticism Game This is an art criticism game designed to be used in a museum gallery. I use 8 posters to turn my classroom into an art gallery. In 4 member teams the students take turns recording responses; all members write their name the single team booklet. The posters I use include information about the artist and the work on the back. The 4 member teams present both the art historical information and their critical response to the whole class.

Billboard Book – Art History #6 The picture cards open to reveal information about the work. The smaller cards above are a quick way to quiz yourself on architect, title, and date.
