Friday-10/05/07 Objective: Students will… - Review how to determine the linear equation in order to model mathematical situations.. Warm-up : Copy & Answer the following questions Add, subtract and multiply the matrices from left to right. HW: Study Notes on Systems of Equations! HSA Quiz - 10/04/07

H.S.A. Review Complete in Student Booklet: “Problem of the Week” for week 6 pg. 10 Quietly, complete individually for class discussion in 6 minutes!

Review - Simple Steps There are normally three steps to following when combining algebraic expressions: 1. Identify key words and choose the appropriate operation(s). 2. Use the operation(s) correctly to combine the expressions. 3. Simplify your results. Results will contain an equal sign. However, on the HSA, you will not need to solve the equation. This means the most important thing is to choosing the appropriate operation (s). All of the problem of this type will appear as selected response questions.

An internet file sharing site charges a one-time membership fee of $10.00 plus $0.99 per download. Which of these equations represents the amount (A) a customer spends, in dollars, for f files? A. A= 0.99 f + 10 B. A = 0.99 f -10 C. A = 10 f - 0.99 D. A = 10 f + 0.99 Example 1

Stephanie needs to rent a room for her graduation party. Company A charges a $200 deposit plus 75 per hour. Company B charges a $300 deposit and $50 per hour. Let x represent the number of hours needed to rent the room and y represent the total cost for person, in dollars. Which of these systems of equations could be used to choose a party room? Example 2 A y = 75x + 200 y = 50x + 300 B y = 75x + 300 y = 50x + 200 C y = 300x + 75 y = 200x + 50 D y = 300x + 50 y = 200x + 75

Some problems require the use of a system of equations. Systems of Equations are a set of two or more linear equations. Again, you will not have to solve the system.

Think, Pair, Share a Math Affair! Complete Worksheets entitled: English to Algebra Worksheet You may write on this worksheet! Each student is responsible for his or her own assignment! Upon completion please turn in and sit quietly!

H.S.A. Review Complete worksheet entitled: “H.S.A. Connection” 1.2.1 Modeling Equations Quietly, complete individually for class discussion in 10 minutes!

Closure – 1 Volunteer What is the difference between an expression and an equation?
