Classification Systems Taxonomy

Maryland Science Content Standard You will be able to explain that organisms sorted into groups share similarities in external structures as well as similarities in internal anatomical structures and processes which can be used to infer the degree of relatedness among organisms

Objective Today, when you leave, you will be able to classify life forms based on their body structure and organization

Notebook Title:Taxonomy Date:5/18/2015

What to Do?? Review your group’s “critter” cards Determine which of the six kingdoms they belong in –Use the: Key booklet Key to the Kingdoms of Life

What to Write Draw a full chart in your notebook like the one seen here. Record the “organism number” and the scientific/common name in the left hand column in your notebook TaxonomyPhylum Characteristics Class Characteristics No: 12 Name: Romalea guttata Grasshopper Phylum: Arthropod Class:

Dichotomous Key A “dichotomous” or “two-answer” key allow you to compare two choices for each of an organism’s characteristics. You should be able to read the par of characteristics and after examining your organism, you’ll answer “no” to one of the pair and “yes” to the other.

Dichotomous Key Using the line for the “yes” characteristic, follow the instruction on where to go next in the key. If the characteristic you said “yes” to ends at a name instead of a direction to the next step, you’ve finished keying out the organism

Practice Identify this “organism” based on the key

1aOrganism shaped like a cube or a sphere If yes, …………………………………………..GO TO 2a If no, …………………………………………….GO TO 1b 1bOrganism shaped like a cylinder If yes, the organism is…………………………………….Cylinderous cellous If no, ………………………………………GO TO 2a 2aOrganism is a cube If yes, the answer is………………………………….Cubous cellous If no, ………………………………………GO To 2b 2bOrganism is a squareSquareous cellous

Identify phylum Follow the key until it ends in a phylum name Write down the group characteristcs that identify the phylum on the Critter Characteristic Sheet that matches the kingdom to which the critter belongs.

Subphylum If you come across a subphylum group, draw a line below the phylum characteristics and write down the subphylum characteristics below it TaxonomyPhylum Characteristics Class Characteristics No: 12visible Name:left/right organization Romalea guttataorgans present Grasshopper body divided into three parts Phylum: has jointed appendages Arthropod Class:hard outer covering has a single pair of antennae on head breathes through tiny body tubes

Class Characteristics In the kingdom Eubacteria, Plantea, and Animalia keys, class groups are also identified in the tables. Put in the Class column.

Questions How many cell types are present in your group’s set of critters? How many types of body organization or body plan are represented in your set of critters? Which kingdoms represented in your set of critters produce young through sexual reproduction?

More Questions In which kingdoms do critters represented in your groups set reproduce through asexual reproduction? Give an example of asexual reproduction in a common food plant Which life characteristcs are present only in eubacteria and archaebacteria? What are different ways in which organisms can get energy?
