4 People in the 13 colonies produced a variety of goods and developed thriving trade routes Apprentices learned skills from artisans who were workers who made things by hand. Each colonial region developed economies based on their available resources. Colonial ships used triangular trade routes, in which slaves, were also traded for goods. The trip from West Africa to the West Indies was known as the Middle Passage.
