G. 3-D Geometry and Measurement Math 9

Outcomes SS9.2 Extend understanding of area to surface area of right rectangular prisms, right cylinders, right triangular prisms, and composite 3-D objects.

Big Ideas To find the Surface Area of a 3D object you only need to find the area of all the faces and add them together.

Key Terms

1. Surface Area Made up of Right Rectangular Prisms SS9.2 Extend understanding of area to surface area of right rectangular prisms, right cylinders, right triangular prisms, and composite 3-D objects.

The object the we just looked at in the last to examples is called a Composite Object because it is made up of other objects.

Example 1

Example 2

Example 3

Practice Ex. 1.3 (p.30) #1-6, 8, 10-13, 15 Or #5-6, 8, 10-13, 14-17

2. Surface Area of More Composite Objects SS9.2 Extend understanding of area to surface area of right rectangular prisms, right cylinders, right triangular prisms, and composite 3-D objects.

We are going to use the same ideas from last day to calculate the area of the different composite objects that we will look at today and any you might see in the future All you have to do is find the area of each piece of the object separately then add the areas together. We are going to add Right Cylinders and Right Triangular Prisms to the Rectangular Prisms that we looked at last day.

We have formulas to find the area of these objects using a combination of formulas that we already know.
