R EALISM, R EALIST OR R EALISTIC ARE TERMS THAT DESCRIBE ANY MANIFESTATION OF PHILOSOPHICAL REALISM, THE BELIEF THAT REALITY EXISTS INDEPENDENTLY OF OBSERVERS, WHETHER IN PHILOSOPHY ITSELF OR IN THE APPLIED ARTS AND SCIENCES. I N THIS BROAD SENSE IT IS FREQUENTLY CONTRASTED WITH I DEALISM. R EALISM IN THE ARTS CONCERNS THE DEPICTION OF SUBJECTS AS THEY APPEAR IN EVERYDAY LIFE. T HESE PAINTERS WANTED THEIR PAINTINGS TO LOOK LIKE PHOTOGRAPHS PHILOSOPHICAL REALISMI DEALISM R EALISM IN THE ARTS Mona Lisa (also known as La Gioconda or La Joconde, or Portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo ) is a portrait by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. It is a painting in oil on a poplar panel, completed circa 1503–1519. LEONARDO DA VINCI (1452- 1519) Leonardo da Vinci was born April 15, 1452 in Anchiano, near Vinci, Italy, and died May 2, 1519 in Cloux, France. His father, Ser Piero, was a respected Florentine businessman. His mother, Caterina, was a peasant women. Ser Piero's parents did not consider Caterina a worthy catch, so Ser Piero and Caterina remained unmarried. Caterina later married someone of her own station. Da Vinci´s self-portrait.
