3 Session 2: Focus on thoughts: lengthening the fuse trigger Thoughts and feelings Reaction It’s not what happens to us that makes us angry, it’s what we think about what has happened that makes us angry. The trigger is what happens. It is the match that lights the fuse. Someone pushes you. The fuse is what you think about what happened. You think ‘He pushed me, clumsy fool. Doesn’t he respect me? Does he think I’m the sort of person he can just shove around? If he wants a fight he can have one.’ The dynamite is what you do when you think yourself into being angry. You shove the person away or swear at him. Soon you’re in a fight. The person pushing you is the trigger - no one can stop the triggers happening-what you can control are the thoughts and feelings that make you angry and eventually set off the explosion. The aim is to make the fuse so long that it goes out and the dynamite doesn’t explode. PEAT Anger Management CourseSession 2: I think I’m angry
