5. WHY BOTHER ? Because students and parents have DIRECT CONTACT with employers… …something that they tell us they value highly and which can’t easily be done in other ways

6. WHY BOTHER ? Because AMBITIONS provides opportunities for young people and parents to... take part in SKILLS-BASED ACTIVITIES get information about particular PERSONAL QUALITIES, ABILITIES & INTERESTS relevant to different employment areas find out about possible PROGRESSION ROUTES and TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES develop an awareness of different EMPLOYMENT SECTORS and the range of JOB ROLES within organisations

7. WHY BOTHER ? Because AMBITIONS is a key element of school careers programmes that can motivate students to make the most of their studies, raise their aspirations and help them make informed and realistic choices for the future

8. WHY BOTHER ? Because we know it works! 73% of Year 9 students thought that the AMBITIONS event had helped them to plan for the future 72% of Year 9 students felt that taking part in AMBITIONS workshops with employers had improved their awareness of different jobs 68% of Year 9 students enjoyed the workshops in which they took part 98% of students and parents got useful information at the AMBITIONS EVENING EVENT

AMBITIONS WORKSHOPS South Gloucestershire Year 9 students (about 2500) will be attending AMBITIONS workshops The main aim is to give students an insight into different areas of employment through interactive workshops and skills activities A key element of Key Stage 4 (GCSE, L2 BTEC) options choices preparations Students take part in preparatory activities and have made 5 workshop choices in advance Supervising teachers also make workshop choices - AMBITIONS is a useful professional development opportunity!

The Skills Show Experience is being delivered throughout England and aims to inspire the next generation of skilled young people, to raise aspirations across a spectrum of opportunities in further education, skills and Apprenticeships, and is at the forefront of delivering a new model of experiential careers education through a wide range of local partners.

18. The Skills Show Experience is a nationwide programme of over 220 events between now and December 2014 that will extend the impact of The Skills Show to over 200,000 young people across the country.

HAVE-A-GO activities give people a ‘bite-size’ practical taster of a skill, trade or profession, providing an insight into different types of work HAVE-A-GO activities should be… practical, hands-on activities achievable within a short (10-15 minute) timescale attractive to young people aged 13-14 (Year 9 workshops) attractive to young people aged 13-19 & parents/adults (Evening Event) high quality and engaging
