2 For 45 minutes on Dec. 6, 1989 an enraged gunman roamed the corridors of Montreal's École Polytechnique and killed 14 women. Marc Lepine, 25, separated the men from the women and before opening fire on the classroom of female engineering students he screamed, "I hate feminists." Almost immediately, the Montreal Massacre became a galvanizing moment in which mourning turned into outrage about all violence against women.

3 Geneviève Bergeron, 21 Geneviève was a second year scholarship student in civil engineering.

4 Geneviève played the clarinet and sang in a professional choir. In her spare time she played basketball and swam.

5 Hélène Colgan, 23 Hélène was in her final year of mechanical engineering and planned to take her Master’s degree.

6 Hélène had three job offers and was leaning towards accepting one from a company based near Toronto.

7 Nathalie Croteau, 23 Nathalie was in her final year of mechanical engineering.

8 Nathalie planned to take a two-week vacation in Cancun, Mexico.

9 Barbara Daigneault, 22 Barbara was in her final year of mechanical engineering.

10 Barbara was a teaching assistant for her father, Pierre Daigneault.

11 Anne-Marie Edward, 21 Anne-Marie was a first year student in chemical engineering.

12 Anne-Marie loved outdoor sports like skiing and diving. She was always surrounded by friends.

13 Maud Haviernick, 29 Maud was a second year student in engineering materials, a branch of metallurgy.

14 Maud was also a graduate in environmental design.

15 Barbara Maria Klucznik, 31 Barbara Maria was a second year engineering student specializing in engineering materials.

16 Barbara Maria arrived in Montreal from Poland with her husband in 1987.

17 Maryse Laganière, 25 Maryse worked in the budget department of the Polytechnique.

18 Maryse was the only non-student killed. She had recently married.

19 Maryse Leclair, 23 Maryse was a fourth year student in engineering materials.

20 Maryse was one of the top students in the school. She acted in plays in junior college. Maryse was the first victim whose name was known. She was found by her father, Montreal police Lt. Pierre Leclair.

21 Anne-Marie Lemay, 27 Anne-Marie was a fourth year student in mechanical engineering.

22 Anne-Marie had planned to graduate in the near future.

23 Sonia Pelletier, 28 Sonia was to graduate the next day in mechanical engineering. She was awarded a degree posthumously.

24 Sonia was the head of her class and the pride of St-Uric, Quebec. She had five sisters and brothers. Sonia had a job interview lined up for the following week.

25 Michèle Richard, 21 Michèle was a second year student in engineering materials.

26 Michèle was presenting a paper with Maud Haviernick when she was killed.

27 Annie St-Arneault, 23 Annie was a mechanical engineering student.

28 Annie was killed as she sat listening to a presentation in her last class before graduation. She had a job interview with Alcan Aluminium scheduled for the following day. Annie talked about eventually getting married to the man who had been her boyfriend since she was a teenager.

29 Annie Turcotte, 21 Annie was a first year student in engineering materials.

30 Annie was described as gentle and athletic, enjoying diving and swimming. She lived with her brother in a small apartment near the university. Annie went into metallurgical engineering so she could one day help improve the environment.
