If these sharks are found in “Shark no go zones” and are over three meters long they will be culled. These sharks are getting culled because the government is trying to prevent any more shark attacks. Sharks are being culled mainly on the Western Australian Coast because the government are getting worried about all of the shark attacks that have been occurring lately. The main way that sharks are getting culled is by using baited drum line (Baited drum lines are buoys that are set out in the areas of ‘Shark no go zones’ and are baited with meat and if a shark eats what is on the baited drum line they get caught and killed. Sharks can also be caught in shark nets in holes that have already been made, this means that the sharks suffer a painful death. There are many protests going on around at beaches where shark culling is most frequent. There are many protests happening in WA, the largest event was when more than 6, 000 people gathered at Cottesloe Beach. There have been people chaining themselves to vessels so that they couldn’t catch sharks and then kill them. During protests, crowds have been chanting “rights, rights, rights, for great whites” and “Great Whites have rights!” Though there are many protests happening around Australia and there are a lot of people involved, the Government is not listening and there are very few people who are actually acting on the issue. Though sometimes sharks can be vicious, we need sharks in our underwater environment to keep a balance on the food chain and for sustainability in the population of other fish. Sharks attack the unhealthy or older fish in the ocean. Therefore reducing diseases from the sea and healthier fish will be produced. Summary of the Issue As you can see, my campaign strongly believes that shark culling should be minimized drastically and in the future, be completely banned. Sharks that are not posing a threat to humans should not be cruelly killed, if they accidently come to close to the shore, we should scare them off with some type of technology rather than killing them. Culling sharks does not keep them away from coasts and does not prevent shark attacks. If the only solution is to kill of the sharks from areas near the coast, this shows that the Government haven’t thought thoroughly about their action plan and how it could affect people and the environment.
