The subduction of the oceanic plate beneath the North American Plate caused the uplift of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Erosion of sediment from the Sierra Nevada filled in the San Joaquin Valley and continues to this day. SJVRocks!! CSUBakersfield Department of Geological Sciences
