BOTTLE ROCKET DESIGN CHALLENGE APPLYING NEWTON’S LAWS OF MOTION
2
OBJECTIVE STUDENTS WILL SUMMARIZE NEWTON’S LAWS AND DRAW PICTURES THAT REPRESENTS THE LAW AS AN EXAMPLE Do Now Have on desk - Newton’s Laws graphic organizer & Mathematics of Physics Journal Question – How do you think we can use rockets to show all of Newton’s Laws?
3
NEWTON’S LAWS We will use the Links on Learn to fill in our Newton’s Laws Graphic Organizer 1 st Use the link Newton’s Laws of Motion for Notetaking – After summarizing from your reading, watch the video and add to your notetaker.
4
DOWNLOAD BOTTLE ROCKETS AND NEWTON’S LAWS OF MOTION Read each of Newton’s Laws and the paragraph about how that law would apply to rockets. Draw a picture of how the rockets would apply to each of Newton’s Laws Be sure to include force arrows and indicate velocity and acceleration
5
SAFETY AND PROCEDURES Roles Reader – reads to group Summarizers (2) – summarizes what reader reads Recorder – writes what summarizers summarize
6
PROBLEMS TO BE SOLVED This experiment has three separate problems to be solved; stability, velocity and altitude, and recovery. Stability – getting the rockets to fly straight instead of flipping over and over Velocity & Altitude – getting maximum velocity and altitude Recovery – safely recovering the rocket without damage
7
PROJECT REQUIREMENTS The class will be broken into three teams. Each team will contain three divisions. The three divisions of the team will work together to generate a final rocket design that incorporates each division’s specialty. Each team will present their rocket to the other two teams in a final competition. The rockets will be judged in three areas: 1) Stability, 2) Velocity, 3) Ease of Recovery
8
TEAM ORGANIZATION Assign roles to each team member: Timer, Recorder, Rocket PR (pump and run), and Altitude Tracker. Develop hypotheses and write them down Identify and list the variables Review and summarize the launch procedures
