Overview of this workshop Social Constructivism Model lesson-- Nature or Nurture? Each lesson will focus on a single reading topic Pre-reading: Text Impressions During and Post-reading : Two-column Notes and Structured Academic Controversy Strategies Review Strategies Implementation

Social Constructivism Knowledge is socially constructed Cultural knowledge is transformed into personal knowledge through social activity Learning is a product of participation in various communities

Activity One: Pre-Reading Text Impressions We are going to read Nature or Nurture? Using the vocabulary words below, write a one paragraph describing what you think the article is about: GeneticsPersonalityTraits EnvironmentPredisposedParents InfluenceExperience

Text Impressions When you are finished, find a partner Read your descriptive paragraph to your partner When you both have finished reading your paragraphs, find another pair (create a group of four)

Activity Two: During Reading Two-column Notes Structured Academic Controversy You should be in a group of two pairs of two One pair in your group will represent the Nature argument and fill out the “From My Knowledge” section of the Two-column notes worksheet. They will then read the article, filling in the “From the Book” section. The other pair will represent the Nurture argument and fill out the “From My Knowledge” section of the Two-column notes worksheet. They will then read the article, filling in the “From the Book” section.

Activity Three: Post Reading You and your partner should prepare an “argument” for your perspective (nature or nurture) The other pair in your foursome should prepare an argument for their perspective When you are finished, each pair will present their argument to the other pair

Changing Perspectives After each pair presents their argument, you will switch perspectives If you and your partner argued for nature, you will now prepare an argument for nurture, and vice-versa When you have finished preparing, present your argument to the other pair

Classroom Applications With your partner, discuss how each of you can use the previous strategies in your classrooms Be ready to share your ideas with the rest of the group
