Northolt Extended Schools Partnership Student Survey 2007

Methodology Two consultation formats for different year groups: Paper survey – Key Stages 2, 3 & 4 Classroom activity – Foundation, Key Stage 1 & Special Schools All 15 schools in the Northolt Extended Schools Partnership participated in the consultation. 1,335 surveys were completed by Key Stage 2, 3 & 4 students 33 Foundation, Key Stage 1 & Special School classes participated in the classroom activity.

Key Stages 3 & 4 After school & Lunchtime Activities (based at school) Key Stage 3 & 4 students mentioned 44 activities/clubs that they are currently involved in. By far the most popular activity, mentioned by 21% of respondents, was Football.

Differences by gender: A far higher proportion of boys mentioned that they play Football, Table Tennis and Basketball, while Netball was far more popular with girls. Key Stages 3 & 4 After school Activities/Clubs (out of school) Students mentioned 63 out of school activities/clubs in which they are currently involved. By far the most popular activity, mentioned by 18% of respondents, was Football.

Key Stages 3 & 4 After school Activities/Clubs (out of school) Gender differences: Football was the most popular out of school activity for boys, while Dance was the most popular activity for girls. A similar proportion of boys and girls mentioned that they go swimming. Non participation: 46% of respondents specifically mentioned that they do not participate in any after school activities/clubs that are not run by the school. A higher proportion of girls mentioned that they do not participate in after school activities/clubs (53%) compared to boys (41%).

Key Stages 3 & 4 Activities/clubs that students would like to have offered through school Students mentioned 99 activities/clubs that they would like to have offered through school. By far the two most popular activities were Swimming and Cooking (mentioned by 15% & 14% of respondents, respectively). Clear difference in the level of interest shown in particular activities based on gender. Cooking, Dance, Fashion/Textiles & Drama/Performing Arts are far more popular with girls. Football and Snooker/Pool are favoured by boys. Certain activities, such as Swimming, ICT/Computing, Singing/Rap and Basketball are popular with both girls and boys.

Key Stages 3 & 4 School Holiday Activities Students mentioned 88 activities/events that they currently like doing during the holidays Two activities were by far the most popular: Football and Swimming (mentioned by 28% and 27% of respondents, respectively) Activities such as Swimming, Seeing Friends, Dance, Shopping, Day Trips and Art & Crafts are more popular with girls, whereas Football and Computer Games are more popular with boys.

Key Stages 3 & 4 Holiday activities that students would like to have offered Students mentioned 102 activities that they would like to have offered over the school holidays The top five most popular were: Football, Swimming, Dance, Art & Crafts and Cooking (see fig. below) Boys favoured Football, Snooker/Pool and Cricket, while girls favoured Dance, Art & Crafts, Cooking, Fashion/Textiles and Drama/ Performing Arts.

Key Stages 3 & 4 Looking After You Students were presented with a list of health and social topics and were asked to tick the topics in which they are interested. By far the two most popular topics, were ‘Healthy Foods and Healthy Cooking’ and ‘Healthy Lifestyles and Staying in Shape’

Special Schools After School Activities Students mentioned 35 after school activities that they currently do. The most common activities were ICT/Computing and Football. When asked what they would like to do after school, students mentioned 34 different activities. By far the most popular activity was Football.

Special Schools Holiday Activities Students mentioned a total of 43 activities that they currently do in the school holidays. The top activity was Computing/Games, followed by Swimming and Shopping. When asked what they would like to do during the school holidays, a total of 66 activities were noted. By far the most popular response was that they would like to ‘Go on Trips’.

Observations Students in Northolt currently participate in a wide range of school-based and out of school activities. Yet, the consultation suggests that a significant proportion of students do not participate in any school-based activities. There seems to be a significant drop in the level of participation in school-based activities amongst girls once they move from primary to secondary school. In general, there appears to be significantly higher levels of participation in school-based and out of school activities amongst boys, compared to girls.

Observations The consultation revealed that there is a high level of interest amongst students in Northolt in the proposal to offer a range of activities through school. Students mentioned a vast range of activities/clubs that they would like see offered in their local area Four activities in particular were very popular across Key Stages 2, 3 and 4 and these were: Cooking, Swimming, Football, and Dance. Football was also the most popular activity noted by Foundation, Key Stage 1 and Special School classes. Art & Crafts was another popular activity that the younger students in particular (Key Stages 1 and 2) and students at Special Schools would like to see offered through school.

Observations There is also a high level of interest amongst students in the proposal to offer activities and events during the school holidays. The top five most popular activities suggested by students across Key Stages 2, 3 and 4 were Swimming, Art & Crafts, Cooking, Football and Dance. By far the most popular response from Foundation, Key Stage 1 and Special School classes was that the students would like to ‘Go on Trips’ during the school holidays, including visits to the seaside, zoos, museums, farms and castles.

Observations This Extended Services consultation has provided a valuable insight into current levels of student participation in school-based and out of school activities. It has also provided valuable information on the types of activities that students would like to have offered in their local area. This information will support the Northolt Extended Schools Partnership in the development of a programme of after school and holiday activities that reflects the needs and interests of students in Northolt.
