Strutting Your Mathematical Stuff: Graphics Design on the TI-83/84 Plus

The Essentials Open to all Senior High Mathematics students Involves use of the TI83/84 Plus calculators You must create a graphic design using mathematical equations This project is meant to be done individually rather than in pairs or groups. NCSD Graphics Design Competition 09-102/1/2010

Requirements Keep a learning journal – Date – What you did description of what you were trying to do the equations it took to do it – Sketch of your progress – (Lots of info on completing a journal, including a sample, is included in the Learning Journal Handout) NCSD Graphics Design Competition 09-102/1/2010

Requirements Academic/Advanced Mathematics Use a minimum of 20 equations from the courses you have done and are doing now. Math 1204Math 2204/2205Math 3204/3205Math 3103Math 3207 At least one of EACH of the following:  Linear  Parabolic  Simple Exponential (i.e. of the form y = b x )  Absolute Value At least one:  Sinusoidal Choose at least TWO of:  Advanced Exponential (i.e. of the form y = a ● b x or y = a ● b x + c  Logarithmic  Circle or Ellipse Any ONE of:  Cubic  Quartic  Quintic Any TWO of:  Square Root Function (Radical Function)  Polynomial Graph (Cubic, Quartic, or Quintic)  Rational Function  Trigonometric Graph (involving tan, cot, csc, or sec) NCSD Graphics Design Competition 09-102/1/2010

Requirements General Mathematics Use a minimum of 20 equations from the courses you have done and are doing now. Math 1206Math 2206Math 3206 At least one of EACH of the following: Linear Parabolic Same graphs as Math 1206 At least one of: Quadratic Exponential NCSD Graphics Design Competition 09-102/1/2010

Other Requirements See the instructions handout titled Requirements, Calculator Tips, and Submission Instructions for more information on all the requirements of the competition. NCSD Graphics Design Competition 09-102/1/2010

How do I make a graphic on the calculator? All the information you need to get started is in the instructions handout. NCSD Graphics Design Competition 09-102/1/2010

Judging Projects will be submitted online (more details to follow later) Projects will be judged by region and grade level. Regional winners will be invited to attend a district wide competition and activity day in May NCSD Graphics Design Competition 09-102/1/2010

Scholarship PRIZES! Regional Winners (for each of the 5 regions): – 1 st place (for each of grades 10, 11 & 12) - $100 – 2 nd place (for each of grades 10, 11 & 12) - $75 – 3 rd place (for each of grades 10, 11 & 12) - $50 District Event: – 1 st place (for each of grades 10, 11 & 12) - $200 – 2 nd place (for each of grades 10, 11 & 12) - $150 – 3 rd place (for each of grades 10, 11 & 12) - $100 NCSD Graphics Design Competition 09-102/1/2010
