Session Goals Participants will be able to: – Access science instructional resources to support science teaching and learning – Integrate common core standards into Science NGSSS – Plan and model scientific thinking through inquiry based hands on center investigations – Enhance interaction among students to foster greater understanding of science through collaboration – Effectively use data as a planning tool to increase student achievement. – Create an intervention plan to address secondary benchmarks and review all annually assessed benchmarks.

Grade 5 Science FCAT 2.0 2014 Testing Information Grade 5 FCAT: April 21 and 22 (1 session per day) Grades 8 FCAT: April 15 (both sessions in 1 day) Science will be administered in two 80-minute sessions with a break in the middle of each session. Grade 5 sessions are administered over two days and Grade 8 both sessions in one day. Total number of questions: 60-66 – 30-33 questions per session – allowing about 2.5 minutes per question

Dade County Science Teachers’ Association (DCSTA) 2014 Teacher of the Year Awards. Awards are designed to honor one classroom teacher in each of the following three levels of teaching: K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Nominees must be a full-time (the majority of the day in direct instruction to students) classroom teacher and be in at least their third year of teaching. Applications and more information will be sent out as a Weekly Briefing and by the Science Department in March. Applications will be due on April 28 th, 2014. DCSTA Science Teacher of the Year Awards Banquet will be on May 16, 2017 at the Marriott Miami Airport Hotel.

FCR-STEMLearn Certificate The FCR-STEMLearn Certificate Program aims to provide professional development to approximately 1,000 teachers across the state of Florida during the summer of 2014. The PD includes an 80 hour face-to-face summer institute in Orlando with follow-up lesson study in the fall. FCR-STEM will cover the hotel and travel costs for teachers selected to attend the PD. PD attendees who complete all program requirements will receive a $2,000 stipend. The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), the nation's highest honors for teachers of mathematics and science (including computer science), is now open for nominations and will close on April 1, 2014 (Due Date).
