The Budget Crunch And Our Virtual Datacenter Presented By Joe Lanager

 Budgets have been shrinking  Can no longer sustain 3 year automatic hardware refresh  “Must do more with less!”  Demands For Virtual Infrastructure Resources Are Increasing  Increased file storage  New VM requests  Most are application/64 bit servers  Increased storage and network I/O demands  Increased base memory requirements per VM  Departments looking to virtualize aging lab servers

 Show and Tell  Our current infrastructure  Current Action Plan  Compare notes  Is everyone experiencing the same crunch?  How are you dealing with it?

 Two Clusters Separated Across Campus  Four Hosts per Cluster  Three Dell 2950s  One Dell R710  192GB of RAM  36 Cores  Storage: 27TB Active and 27TB DR mirror  Two Dell MD3000i’s each with an MD1000  70% Storage Currently Allocated

 ~100 Virtual Machines  File/Print/AD – 38%  High I/O during file level backups  Application (SQL, Web, SharePoint, etc.) - 46%  High Resource Needs  Other (DNS, DHCP, RADIUS, etc.): 14%  Low Resource Needs  DR Replicas: ~50  ~25 Cloned Backup VMs

ESX Server Switch 27 TB Active Storage DR Storage Management / vMotion Virtual Machines Private iSCSI Switch Dell 2950 32GB RAM Dual Xeon Quad Core 2.66 GHz ESX Server Dell R710 96GB RAM Dual Xeon Six Core 2.66 GHz

Hammond ClusterHallowell Cluster Dept 1 LUNDept 1 DR LUN

 Double-Take for Virtual Infrastructure (DTVI)  Was touted as “state of the art” 4 years ago  Now it’s a DEAD PRODUCT  Only works with ESX (NOT ESXi)  Licensed by number of VMs protected  Must drop DTVI to move beyond ESX 4.1  No storage level replication with MD3000i  Looking at VMware Site Recovery Manager  Interested in what everyone else is using

 Replace Components / Add Capacity As Budget Allows  No large scale replacements  Keep decommissioned equipment for parts if applicable  Remove duplicated services whenever possible  Multiple SEP servers, etc.  Charge for extra storage or server needs  Better Management  Looking at VMware vCenter Operations  Find underutilized servers and reduce resource allocations  Usage reports for departments and Deans

 Consolidation  Are any units considering consolidating with other units in your University?  Central IT  Distributed/Partnered Data Centers Throughout University  Outsourcing  DR Protection  University Datacenter, Big 10 partner, Cloud?  Outsourced Datacenter
