Monsoons (seasonal winds/rain storms) bring cold weather. East cost of South Korea has warmer winters. The spring in South Korea receives 30- 50 inches of rain.

South Korea has many types of sports. Tae Kwan Do is a style of self defense and fighting. Tae Kwan Do started in Korea 2,000 years ago. Ssirum is similar to wrestling. Koreans practiced ssirum for 1,500 years. Changgi is similar to Chinese chess. The players try to capture each others general. South Korea hosted the Summer Olympic Games in 1988. Korean’s famous people are very important to their country. Queen Sondak was the ruler of the Silla Kingdom. She encouraged learning. Korea’s most admired hero is Yi Sun-Shin. He invented the iron-covered war-ship. With that ship he tried to defeat Japans attack. Park Chung Hee was the president in 1961. He improved the economy and developed industries.
