Provide high-quality constructive learning experiences—5E model, for example Provide mathematically rigorous learning experiences Move between concrete, pictorial, and abstract at all levels of curriculum Emphasize real-world problem solving Incorporate frequent formative and summative assessment

Assess for need Focus on number sense—rational number attributes and operations Provide direct, systematic, and explicit instruction Use Concrete-Representational-Abstract sequencing Give appropriate attention to procedural fluency (facts and algorithms) Be consistent Address motivation and productive disposition

Determine when you will do this intervention Choose your groups—homogeneous, strategic Plan the intervention schedule Prepare the materials Pretest (optional) 5-10 minutes fluency, ~20 minutes lesson Progress monitor Posttest
