(brief) RTI OVERVIEW & BENCHMARK ASSESSMENT TRAINING: 2nd-5th Grades MEASURING STUDENT PROGRESS IN YOUR PLC Lake Myra Elementary School * July 2009
2
Intervention Alignment ….IA Response to Intervention…RTI …. is a collaborative learning process of providing differentiated research based data driven instruction and intervention to both high achieving & struggling learners to predict, measure & evaluate academic growth.
3
Universal Core Instruction Benchmark Assessments PLC Collaboration Tiers of Intervention Progress Monitoring
4
RTI Pyramid Tier 3 – Intensive Individualized Instruction Tier 2 – Small Group Targeted Instruction Increasing Intensity Tier 1 – Universal Core Instruction
5
Desired Outcomes After TodayAfter Week 1After Week 2After Week 3 Know how to administer and score the benchmark assessment. Administer and score 5 students, then at the end of week 1, come back together for a troubleshooting and debriefing check-in. Administer and score 5 or more students. Check in at the end of the week if necessary. Complete and score rest of class and meet to enter data at early release day.
6
Benchmark Assessments General Outcome Measures “Predictors” “Indicators”of reading achievement Big 5 Areas – R-CBM Fluency assesses Fluency & Comp. Standardized Research based Time Sensitive Short for “do-ability” CBM – Curriculum Based Measurement
7
R-CBM: Oral Fluency – Before Testing Student Passages (3 – Fall) Class List Stop Watch (F&P Kit) Clipboard Pencil 1:1, away from distractions, sit across from, best vs. fast reading, it’s about testing not teaching
8
During Testing Administration Fidelity Standardized directions Emphasize Words Read Correctly 3-Second Rule No Other Corrections Discontinue Rule Being Polite Speed Reading Interruptions
9
Oral Fluency - Rules for Scoring What is a word read correctly? What is an Error? What is not Incorrect? Score = WRC/Errors Qualitative Features Checklist Practice Oral Reading Fluency Passages Practice 1 – Passage 1 Practice 2 – Passage 5 Practice 3 – Passage 8
10
R-CBM Practice Video 1- Passage 1
11
R-CBM Practice Video 2 – Passage 5
12
R-CBM Practice Video 3 – Passage 8
13
Oral Fluency - Rules for Scoring What is a word read correctly? What is an Error? What is not Incorrect? Score = WRC/Errors Practice Oral Reading Fluency Passages Median Words Correct/ Median Errors ** Score immediately
14
CBM Reading Maze GOM of Comprehension Administered whole class 3 minutes – timed, stopwatch vs. wall clock Students circle correct choice The dog barked (in, at, is) the cat – Cover Sheet Slash / through incorrect responses Maze Score = total number of corrects/errors Prorating: pg.16
15
Next Steps How does the benchmark assessment data fit into the PLC conversation? What does the benchmark assessment data tell us?
