OCLC Online Computer Library Center Pattern recognition Lorcan Dempsey PALINET's 7th Annual OCLC Users Conference, May 28-30, 2003 Keynote presentation

Pattern We have no future because our present is too volatile. We have only risk management. The spinning of the given moment’s scenarios. Pattern recognition … The knowledge imposes a pattern, and falsifies, For the pattern is new in every moment The knowledge imposes a pattern, and falsifies, For the pattern is new in every moment

Overview

Environment Increasingly complex collections Changing patterns of behavior – research, learning, cultural engagement Creating value Funding envelope? The scholarly and cultural record in a digital environment? Look at: –Special collections –Research and learning –Wide open web –All the other stuff Books, journals, A&I !!

Reclaiming the ‘special’

The Archival Research Center is a direct outgrowth of the belief that primary resource materials should be a major focal point of instruction and research. …. However, traditional access to these materials is cumbersome and labor-intensive and most institutions do not allow copying. …Digitizing these materials keeps them alive and relevent for modern users … (ARL report)

The return of the special There is growing appreciation among libraries that unique or rare materials – are valuable research and learning resources – that they have been underutilized, – that digitization offers opportunities for releasing their value in new ways. There is a growing interest in digitizing cultural heritage materials – as a way of disclosing the memory and identity of communities.

The engagement with research and learning

Research and learning Research and learning behavior is increasingly entering the network space – Library resources need to be available at the appropriate stage within the learning or research environment – New forms of engagement and support. – Research and learning outputs will present major management and curatorial issues – Institutions and faculty are interested in ‘disclosing’ research and learning materials as part of the scholarly enterprise (OAI)

Books, journals, … Rich business apparatus. Commodity? Ease of access – D2D Discovery <> locate <> request <> Delivery Reduce costs of processing Increased interest in management information for collection development, collection management, … Increased interest in outsourcing? Collections – Vanilla – Specialist formats, language, communities

Licensed materials “Like many libraries, the UW Libraries has struggled with how to effectively and efficiently manage its growing licensed resources such as e-journals, A&I databases, and full-text services. We were using a mix of locally developed and maintained files and databases (in file cabinets, on our intranet, etc.) to manage our electronic resources. In a highly distributed workflow and service provision environment, the UW Libraries sought a way to integrate this information with our local system and streamline our processes.” Univ. Washington response. ARL survey.

Resources Licensed –D2D Rights and linking Portalization? –Visibility and integration –Value –Streamline management of licenses –Long term access Bought –D2D New catalog configurations –Enhance records –Get better management information for resource sharing, collection management, collection development

Wide open web Ongoing interest in mediating access to high- quality Internet resources linked to other resources and interests of users Multiple local and shared initiatives

Institutional digital content management Immature (diverse metadata creation practice -- hierarchical description, multiple standards and practices, diverse content management approaches) OAI? Shining a light on hidden resources. Extend knowledge organization approaches? Incentive to preserve? Manage commodity materials and services - cost. Streamline discovery to delivery for print (owned) and digital (licensed) materials Portalization and resource sharing Management intelligence – collection management and analysis (print collections) Incentive to preserve?

The pattern is new in every moment Different materials call forward different types of attention –Selection –Organization –Collection management –Securing access –Preservation What is a collection? Responsibility to the scholarly record –Licensed –Below the line –Print Fragmentation of knowledge technologies? –Knowledge organization – topics, places, names, educational standards, resource types –Identifiers –etc
