3. 1-1:Why do individuals volunteer their time?

4. 1-1 Majority of responses involved social or family – 75% family involvement – 50% social interaction – 45% giving back to the community Personal – 70% satisfaction of some form – 40% sharing of knowledge, experience and expertise – 35% high school hours

5. 1-2:What motivates a volunteer to become part of an organization and what stimulates a volunteer going forward?

6. 1-2 Majority fall into the following areas – 60% recognition – 55% family involvement – 50% accomplishment, reward or results – 40% passionate or love for the game

7. 1-3:What are the volunteer challenges and how do we solve them?

8. 1-3: Solutions Right people in the right jobs Openness Communication Setting deadlines to avoid things taking longer than they should

9. 1-3: Challenges 60% time conflicts, not having enough time 40% burning out or not having enough volunteers 35% conflicts/negativities

10. 1-4:What would you include in a toolbox to assist with recruitment and retention of volunteers?

11. 1-4: 55% recognition/awards 40% advertise/get word out/communication 40% role definitions

12. Thoughts Initially family or love for the sport will draw people to volunteer the challenge is to retain these individuals Question—how do we attract others to join who may not have been previously exposed or have family members to bring them back new Try new approaches in asking for help

13. Session #2 Officials Saturday August 6, 2011 9:00am to 12:00pm

14. 2-1: What can you do as an Association to improve Officiating? What can the NOHA do?

15. 2-1: 60% Mentorship 55% skill training, skating,etc 45% support officials 25% recruitment drive

16. 2-2:How do we better educate the hockey public about the world of Officiating?

17. 2-2: 90% Parent meeting, Code of conduct and Parent “Speak Out” 70% Posters, educate, advertise, media 30% Educate coaches/code of conduct

18. 2-3:How can we better recruit Officials and retain them?

19. 2-3: 65% Recruitment video, posters etc 60% pay and other perks or compensation 45% Mentorship/knowing they will be backed up 25% recognition Get Junior A players to ref one house league game a year to give them experience

20. 2-4:How do we recruit quality Supervisors?

21. 2-4: 60% compensation or incentives 50% past officials or retired officials 40% training

22. Session #3 Athletes Pathways Saturday August 6, 2011 1:15pm to 5:00pm

23. 3-1:What is Athlete Development and how does it occur?

24. 3-1: 60% whole athlete life long 45% appropriate skills at the appropriate time 35% coaching 25% positive/fun/fair experiences

25. 3-2:What should be significant factors to guarantee successful player development going forward?

26. 3-2: 60% Practice, hard work, training 55% Coaching and mentoring 30% having goals and motivation

27. 3-3:What are the barriers to Athlete and Coach Development and how has Development changed over time?

28. 3-3: 70% time and money constraints 55% attitudes (parents and players) 50% coaching (certification, education, attitude and availability of resources) 40% skills (availability to learn and quality)

29. 3-4: What would you include in a toolbox for Coaches and Athletes to improve Hockey in the North?

30. 3-4: 65% Media, videos, manuals (available both paper and web based) 40% education and communication (clinics, workshops, etc)

32. We need to change—continue discussions about freedom of movement for the whole NOHA You need to be playing the same system as the rest of your team—working towards a common goal Skill development is critical

33. Europe the structure is built from the top down Get goalies involved in skating drills at an early age Keep practices for the goalies at game speed to everyone Suggest 2:1 practice to game ratio Enhance off ice training potential such as gyms, road hockey, soccer, etc.

34. General Comments Officials need to service the game first, feel part of a team second and then look after themselves 2 Official system for every game – equal responsibility Lead, develop and promote positive hockey experience

35. General Comments Health and well-being of nation starts with an effective sports system Active for life Building athletic base Over competing and under training

36. General Comments Young people need role models not critics Language, respect, culture, education Opportunity to make things better—fine tuning is a good thing We wait for people to knock at our door—we need to approach

37. General Comments What messages are people hearing about minor hockey—is it positive Should be hearing about the great values- team work, learning to budget, learning about independence, etc Why do we not send brochures home with students at school

38. General Comments Need to watch that we don’t become complacent—we need to always improve Better links with university hockey Getting people committed and staying in the game Need exposure of our programs

39. General Comments Allow to see the game playing at the highest level Be a good role model—someone is always watching Communication is critical Players want and need discipline—allows them to excel and win

40. General Comments Kids like to read about their team—it builds pride
