Introduction Introduction to ChinaParts  The project was supported by collaborative efforts between European and Chinese stakeholders to address scientific and technological (S&T) challenges in China, specifically on processing chains for fruits and vegetables.  ChinaParts was a Specific Support Action sponsored by the European Union International Cooperation Activities for Developing Countries.

Objectives Cross-Border Agro-Food Processing S&T Platform Strategy  Encourage successful cross-border agro- food S&T collaborations in the domain of fruit and vegetable processing.  Exchange experiences in the S&T field.  Build bridges between the European Union and China’s agro-food processing sectors.

Methodology The Methodology of ChinaParts The Project was conducted in four phases:  Analysis: Analysis of policies and standards currently in place for agro-food fruits and vegetables processing in China. This helped set the parameters and requirements for developing and structuring the Platform.  Network: Established interest between European and Chinese agro-food networks through regional workshops.

Methodology The Methodology of ChinaParts (Cont.)  Platform Strategy: Development of a cross-border agro-food platform promoting new S&T partnerships. The Platform Strategy met the needs of the agro-food sector and facilitated cross-border collaboration.  Dissemination: The dissemination and promotion of the cross-border agro-food platform strategy in both Europe and China developed the support necessary for its implementation and financing.

Methodology ChinaParts Website  www.spi.pt/chinapartswww.spi.pt/chinaparts  The ChinaParts website was developed not only to be a part of the Cross-Border Agro-Food Processing Platform Strategy but also to act as its center.  The website was regularly updated as the project progressed and contains downloadable files of all project reports  Further development of the project website with links to other major sites will be conducted throughout the platform’s lifetime, with the input and suggestions of all participants.

Methodology ChinaParts Database The ChinaParts Database aimed at supporting the implementation of the cross-border agro-food platform by fostering the exchange of experiences in the Scientific and Technological (S&T) field and contributing to the development of new partnerships. Goals of the Database are:  To collect information on European and Chinese agro-food organizations  To collect information on agro-food projects  To facilitate contacts among European and Chinese agro-food stakeholders

Meetings First International Workshop  Beijing, June 2004  The workshop agenda was structured towards analyzing fruit and vegetable policies of China.  The workshop involved the participation of Chinese and European experts from the fruit and vegetable processing sector.

Meetings First International Workshop In connection with the First International Workshop, three onsite visits were conducted to fruit and vegetable processing facilities within the Beijing area. These visits were made to the following processing facilities:  Beijing Shunxin Qianshou Co. Ltd.  Beijing Huabang Food Co., Ltd.  Beijing Huiyuan Fruit Juice Drink Group Co.

20 1,6/1,6 cm Overview of ChinaParts project January 2006 IV. Meetings First International Workshop Beijing Shunxin Qianshou Co., Ltd.  Beijing Shunxin Qianshou Co. Ltd. was founded in 2000 and is the first beverage firm that advocated the concept of fruit and vegetable juice in China.  Beijing Shunxin Qianshou employs the newest international vegetable deep process technology, in order to guarantee safety, delicacy, and juice nuitrition.

21 1,6/1,6 cm Overview of ChinaParts project January 2006 IV. Meetings First International Workshop Beijing Huabang Food Co., Ltd.  Beijing Huabang Food Co., Ltd. Is a large enterprise specializing in the production of fruit juice, with an annual production capacity of 100,000 tons.  Over the course of 9 years of development, its total assets have increased 15 times, its production capacity 30 times and its output value 20 times.

Meetings First International Workshop Beijing Huiyuan Beverage and Food Group Co.  In 2003, the Huiyuan Group represented 51,1% of the total Chinese juice, juice drink, and vegetable juice drink production output.  Huiyuan has a market penetration rate of 70.4%.

Meetings Second International Workshop  Beijing, December 2004  The workshop agenda was structured towards establishing interest among individuals and organizations for the development of international agro-food processing collaborations.  The workshop focused on the development of an international scientific platform for the agro-food industry and was attended by 40 stakeholders from China and Europe active in agro-food processing, research, industry and government.
