3. Down to Earth. Stewart, M. Compass Point Books. 2004.  Grades 1-3  Nonfiction  What’s the best way to learn about rocks and soil ? By doing the independent activities presented in this book. The text’s open-ended questions and clear, age- appropriate explanations help students discover the science all around them.

4. Dirt. Tomecek, S. National Geographic Children's Books. 2007.  Grades 1-3  Nonfiction  This is an informational book about soil told by a star-nosed mole. What is soil ? Who lives in dirt ? How does earth help things grow ? The answers are within this fun- and fact-filled picture book.

5. A Handful of Dirt. Bial, R. Walker and Company. 2001.  Grades 2-4  Nonfiction  Soil may not be alive, but amazingly, multitudes of microscopic creatures live there. These tiny creatures provide food for the insects, that in turn feed the reptiles and mammals that live in and above the soil. This book is very good for it’s photos and instruction concerning what lives in the soil.

American Society of Agronomy. 2008.  Grades 3-6  Nonfiction  Get kids excited about the living world of soil with this new publication from the Soil Science Society of America. This book explores how soil is part of our life-the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink, the houses we live in, and more. Along the way, readers learn about different kinds of soil and meet the scientists who work with soil every day.
