15 CELJE o Is the third-largest town in Slovenia, o population: about 50,000, o pleasant town on the banks of the Savinja river, o surrounded by hills, o it has a rich natural and cultural heritage and also a remarkable history, o during the Roman period, Celje was known as Celeia.

16 o The Coat of arms of Celje is based on the coat of arms of the Counts of Celje o A similar coat of arms was integrated into the Slovenian national arms o it is also in the centre of the flag of Celje

17 HISTORY o Celje is a very old city, o at the time of the Celts, the place was known as Kelea, o in 15 BC the settlement was incorporated in the Roman Empire and it was known as Celeia, o in that time Celeia was called a small Troy and through Celeia led a Roman road from Aquileia to Pannonia, o the first mention of Celje in the Middle Ages was under the name of Cylie, o the town was the seat of the Counts of Celje in 14th and 15th century, o after their death the region was inherited by the Habsburgs of Austria, o In 15th century they built a city wall, which are defended them against the Turks

18 CITY SIGHTS The Old Castle o In that castle a dynasty of the Counts of Celje lived, o it was built in the second half of the 12th century, o it offers a beautiful view over Celje and its surroundings, o the largest fortress in Slovenia, o the biggest historical tourist attraction of Celje.

19 Prince’s Mansion o In the beginning of the 15th century this was a residence of the Counts of Celje, o after their death it was turned into barracks, o today, you can visit here the archeological exhibition site Celeia – a town under the town

20 Celje Hall o It was built at the beginning of the last century by Celje’s German population o this building was the centre of cultural life for German residents until the end of the First World War o it was originally known as the German house

21 National Hall o It hosts the city authorities o It was built in the 19th century as a cultural, political and social centre of the Slovenian people in Celje

22 Šmartinsko lake o Is a popular destination for fishing, picnics, zorbing, boating… o you can also walk around the lake on a beautiful walking path.

23 The Celje hut o Is a modern hotel situated 9 km away from the city of Celje, o it lies in the middle of nature, o in winter you can ski and board o in summer you can walkaround, bike and you can also take a bobsleigh.
