History Today The City The West End The East End

London - History London was not built as a city in the same way as Paris or New York. It began life as a Roman fortification at a place where it was possible to cross the river Thames. A wall was built around the town for defence. During the long period of peace people built outside the walls. In 1665 there was a terrible plague in London, so many people left the city and escaped to the villages in the surrounding countryside. In 1666 the Great Fire of London ended the plague, but it also destroyed much of the city.

London - Today These days not many people live in the city centre, but London has spread further into the county, including surrounding villages. The metropolis of Greater London covers some 610 square miles. The financial and business centre is called the City. The shopping and entertainment centre is called the West End. The area with docks is called the East End.

The City The City of London is a district of Greater London. The City constituted most of London from its settlement by the Romans in the 1st century AD to the Middle Ages but the conurbation has since grown far beyond its borders. It is now only a tiny part of the metropolis though it remains a notable part of central London. The City holds city status in its own right, and is also a separate ceremonial county.

The City The City has a resident population of about 7,000 (2011) but over 300,000 people commute to and work there, mainly in the financial services sector. The legal profession forms a major component of the northern and western sides of the City – especially in the Temple and Chancery Lane areas where the Inns of Court are located, of which two—Inner Temple and Middle Temple—fall within the City of London boundary

The City Is one of the major banking centres of the world There are banks of many nations in the famous Threadneedle Street Nearby there is the Stock Exchange (shares in commercial companies are brought and sold) A little further along in Leadenhall Street there is Lloyds, the most famous insurance company in the world Fleet Street is famous as the home of the nation´ s newspapers (The Daily Express, the Daily Telegraph)

The West End The West End of London (more commonly referred to as simply the West End) is an area of central London containing many of the city's major tourist attractions, shops, businesses, government buildings, and entertainment venues (including the commercial West End theatres). Use of the term began in the early 19th century to describe fashionable areas to the west of Charing Cross. For strategic planning the area is identified as one of two international centres in the London Plan. The West End is the second most expensive location in the world in which to rent office space, after Tokyo.

The West End The name "West End" is a flexible term with different meanings in different contexts. It may refer to the entertainment district around Leicester Square and Covent Garden; to the shopping district centred on Oxford Street, Regent Street, and Bond Street; or, less commonly, to the whole of that part of central London (itself an area with no generally agreed boundaries) which lies to the west of the City of London.

The West End includes:Trafalgar Square the main shopping centres of Oxford Street Bond Street and Regent Street the entertainment centres of Soho Piccadilly Circus Leicester Square Shaftesbury Avenue

The East End The East End of London, also known simply as the East End, is the area of London, England, east of the medieval walled City of London and north of the River Thames. From the 1950s, the East End represented the structural and social changes affecting the UK economy in a microcosm. The area had one of the highest concentrations of council housing, the legacy both of slum clearance and war time destruction.

The East End The 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics were held in an Olympic Park created on former industrial place. It is intended that this should leave a legacy of new sports facilities, housing, and industrial and technical infrastructure that will further help regenerate the area. This is linked to a new Stratford International station in the Newham, and the future Stratford City development.
