4. PIRATES P – prepare, preview, predict I – investigate the instructions
R – read and write
A – answer the questions
T – turn back to the text
E – evaluate and eliminate
S – survey and celebrate

5. P Prepare, Preview, Predict
Study, get a good night’s sleep, eat a good breakfast, use the bathroom and gett a drink before the test begins, tell yourself “I can do this!”
Preview: what does Pre- mean (before) What does a preview do before a movie? Shows what a movie is like before it comes out. Like a commercial. When you preview a test, you’re taking a look at what’s to come. This includes:
Previewing the titles
Looking at pictures and other text features
Previewing the questions (how many, what kind of things will I be asked to do?)
Predict:
For each passage on a test, predict whether it’s nonfiction or fiction and then using the title and text features, predict what it’s going to be about. (Sets a purpose for reading).

6. I Inspect the Instructions
Read the instructions carefully.
Underline what to do and how to respond.

7. R Read and wRite Read everything on the page!
Write notes in the margins about the big ideas.

8. A Answer the Questions
Answer the questions
Using the T and E

9. T Turn Back to the Text
Be sure you use the text to answer the question.
Include details from the text in constructed response answers.

10. E Evaluate and Eliminate
Evaluate ALL the answer choices.
Eliminate answers you know are wrong.
Choose the BEST answer.

11. S Survey Look over the test to see if you answered all the questions.
Make sure you answered questions in the right way.
Change an answer only if you are sure!
