5 Jimmy was born in Plains, Georgia on October 1, 1924. Attended both GA South- western and GA Tech before graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy Served in the United States submarine force on the second nuclear sub. After his father’s death, Carter returned to Plains to take over the family’s peanut farm and cotton gin. He married Rosalynn also from Plains.

6 Jimmy Carter as State Senator His father had served in the General Assembly as a state senator. So Jimmy run for election to the state senate from the Fourteenth District in 1962. Once elected, Carter devoted much time and attention to educational affairs during his two senate terms. He hoped consolidation and reorganization would lead to more efficiency and more educational opportunities. However, Georgians often saw a conflict in these ideas and their desire to remain segregated in the public schools.

9 Ran against Arnall and Maddox in 1966 and lost. Elected in 1970 in his inaugural address, "No poor, rural, weak, or black person," he declared, "should ever have to bear the additional burden of being deprived of the opportunity of an education, a job, or simple justice." 10 Appointed the state’s first female judge Created the “Heritage Trust” in order to protect our states’ natural and cultural resources Worked to evenly distributed funding for public schools *The recent conflicts in society (civil right movement) have brought about changes in all areas even the Governor’s office in GA. Jimmy Carter became the first deep south governor to speak out against segregation and racism. He also worked to provide more opportunities for minorities and women in the state.

17 Despite many budget woes, Carter was able to make a lasting Impact on the federal government by creating the Departments of Education and Energy and more than doubling the number of National Parks.
