Lincoln and Douglas Debates Lincoln and Douglas had debates all over the state of Illinois for the senate seat. Lincoln loses the senate election, but makes a platform for himself which helps him in the presidential election.

Lincoln’s Platform Lincoln establishes that he Is funny Is smart Doesn’t want to end slavery Doesn’t want slavery to expand

Republican Views Anti state rights Newly formed party created by the former Whigs as their party dissolved They believed that slavery should not expand

Democrats Pro slavery Pro state rights They believe that you should do what is best for the economy They split up in the 1860 election to form the northern democrats and the southern democrats

Election of 1860 Multiple Democratic candidates Lincoln is not on the southern ballots Lincoln wins because the democratic party had multiple candidates that split the vote
