Self Presentation Dress appropriately E.g. polo shirt, tennis shorts and running shoes ‘The first part of being a pro is looking like a pro’ Positive body language Be enthusiastic about the lesson content

Rules & Routines Make class aware of routines E.g. rackets on floor when addressing class in badminton Be consistent with rules Don’t punish whole class for one or a groups behaviour

Rewards & Sanctions Rewards work far better than sanctions E.g. allow a pupil to demonstrate who has done very well If giving out sanctions make sure they are individual Give warnings Be fair and consistent

Grouping & Positioning Know your groups Who work well together & who don’t? Try and position yourself around the perimeter of the playing area When talking to a group/ individual keep the rest of the group in your eyesight

Know Your Students The most important factor! Get to know your pupils (names & personalities) How do they respond to praise/criticism Develop a rapport with them Say hello to them around school

However… Remember you are their teacher not their friend Keep that boundary there If you become to friendly they may not take you seriously when you need to exercise your authority

Differentiate Make sure task caters for everyone If they find it too hard or easy they are more likely to go off task E.g. short handed rackets and low compression balls in tennis for low ability Higher success – more engaged – more positive behaviour
