The two main goals of wellness are to keep you healthy and to help prevent disease and illness. 4

Physical activity is important to maintaining a healthy body weight. Physical activity helps burn calories. Aerobic activities help improve circulation. aerobic Continuous, rhythmic activities that improve heart and lung efficiency. 6

Flexibility is the ability to kneel, bend, turn, and throw. Physical activity helps to control your appetite. Be more active by walking, skating, biking, using the stairs, dancing, and doing chores. 7

Describe four different ways to develop an exercise routine. Option Description Organized exercise Join a team or organize your friends for a regular game, such as volleyball, baseball, or soccer. Use hand weights or machine weights to build muscle and bone density; use cardio machines for aerobic exercise. Indoor exercise Find an activity you can do outdoors, such as walking, swimming, skating, or biking. Outdoor exercise Try exercises that require little or no equipment, such as sit-ups, jump rope, martial arts, or yoga. Exercise anywhere

11 Healthy Body Weight A healthy body weight is not overweight or underweight. Being overweight can lead to obesity. Being underweight is unhealthy due to lack of nutrients. obesity A condition in which a person’s weight is 20 percent or more above his or her healthy weight. 11

12 Healthy and Unhealthy Weight Loss
Balance food calories with energy calories. Avoid fasting, diet pills, and liquid-only diets. Fad diets are nutritionally unbalanced and harmful. Do not use steroids for body building. fast To stop eating. fad diet A diet which promises quick weight loss through unrealistic or unhealthful means. 12

13 Eating Disorders Eating disorders are psychological problems related to food. Both males and females can suffer from eating disorders. eating disorder An extreme eating behavior that can lead to depression, anxiety, and even death.

14 Eating Disorders Describe three common eating disorders. Disorder
Description Anorexia Nervosa A person feels an extreme fear of gaining weight and severely limits eating. A person eats very large amounts of food, then vomits or uses laxatives to get rid of the eaten food. Bulimia Nervosa A person eats large quantities of food at one time. Binge Eating

15 Take Care of Yourself Get counseling for eating disorders, and educate yourself. Do not compare yourself to others. Follow a healthful meal plan and participate in regular physical activity to look and feel your best. Healthful living can improve your attitude.

Wellness is taking positive steps toward your good health. When you are physically fit, you look and feel your best. Fitness is the ability to handle daily events in a healthy way. By exercising regularly you can enjoy all the benefits of fitness. Physical activity is necessary if you want to reach and maintain a healthy body weight. There are many activities you can add to your daily routine to get more movement. 16
